Navigating Future Shock: A Strategic Approach To Emerging Technologies

Paul Jervis Heath
Description

Speculative science fiction author William Gibson once said: “The future is here; it’s just unevenly distributed.” We see this playing out today with the rapid rise of AI, Web3, crypto, AR, VR, and the Internet of Things. The speed at which new technologies move from hype to mainstream is accelerating. Yet, many organisations struggle to keep up, suffering from Future Shock: reacting to every tech trend without a clear strategy.

For UX, product, and innovation teams, this creates a challenge: How do we separate signal from noise? How do we assess which emerging technologies will truly create value for customers and businesses?

In this workshop, designer and strategist, Paul Jervis Heath, will share insights from his own work at the intersection of UX, technology, and business strategy and provide a practical framework for incorporating emerging technologies and innovation into the product roadmap.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
1. Recognize & Overcome Future Shock: Avoid reactive decision-making and build a structured approach to emerging technology.
2. Evaluate New Technologies Effectively: Separate signal from noise and determine what truly creates value.
3 Assess Opportunity Costs: Explicitly analyze trade-offs when investing in AI, Web3, AR/VR, or other emerging technologies.
4. Build a Broad Innovation Portfolio: Use the 3-Horizons Method to balance short-term gains with long-term transformation.
5. Develop a Strategic Roadmap: Define a clear, actionable framework for integrating new technologies into your product roadmap.
